Sniff vs. Sniffle
Knowing the difference between sniffing and sniffling can prevent your characters' actions from seeming awkward. Humans "sniff" to detect smells or stop the nose from running, while sniffling is the act of repeatedly sniffing because of a cold or a crying fit.
